What are the x, y and z axis?

Every 3D printer works using the x, y and z axis. These axis ensure that your 3D print is created and has the correct depth. This point makes the object three-dimensional. The x-axis and y-axis are responsible for the transverse movement, or horizontal movement, and the z-axis is responsible for the vertical movement. Depending on the 3D printer, all axis move, or just one or two. Your printer can use the following positioning systems to move:

  • The print bed moves, instead of the extruder. As a result, the x-axis and y-axis are fixed and only the z-axis moves.

  • Another system is in which the extruder moves and the print bed remains stationary. This means that the z-axis is fixed and the x-axis and y-axis move.  

  • In the third system, the print head is affected by three movable factors. Both the z-axis and the x-axis and y-axis all move in this case.
