My 3D print does not meet expectations

When you start with 3D printing, there is a good chance that your first prints will not be perfect immediately, so that the 3D printer does not seem to meet your expectations. In most cases, however, these ‘defects’ have nothing to do with the quality of the 3D printer, but mainly with the (incorrect) settings. In order to correct these settings, it is important to find out the cause. Most 3D printer problems can be traced back to the following 3 categories:
  • Filament problems
  • Software issues
  • Printer problems

Filament problems

Does your 3D print not stick to the print bed and/or does the surface show holes, bumps, wires or other imperfections, which means that the result is below expectations? This usually has to do with the print bed, the print temperature or the throughput speed of the filament. Depending on the problem, you need to adjust the settings up or down.  

 

As a rule, the print bed should always be perfectly levelled. In addition, it is important to know that the print temperature is different for every material and brand. Although a standard temperature range is indicated for each filament type, the ideal temperature can differ per brand. To find the right temperature, you can use a ‘temp tower’ print in which the print temperature is varied. This way you can see at a glance which temperature is perfect for your filament.

Software issues

Do you have problems filling in your print or have you printed a small design where the dimensions seem to deviate and maybe even parts are missing? Then you can easily adjust this in your slicer software.

Printer problems

No filament comes out of your nozzle, does the printer stop printing halfway through your project or do the layers of your print seem to shift during printing? Then it may be that certain parts need maintenance or need to be replaced. However, the solution can also be very simple. For example, the printer often stops when the filament is used up or when there is a power failure. Does your 3D printer have an automatic resume function? Then the print will resume immediately. Super handy!
