The infill of my 3D print is not strong enough

Does the inside of your print have defects and does this make your print seem less stable? Then weak infill is the most obvious cause. Infill refers to grid structure on the inside of your 3D print. This structure connects the outer layers together and acts as a support for the upper layers. In short, weak infill is a weak internal structure.

How do you recognise weak infill?

If the inside of your 3D print looks unstable and shows signs of 'stringing' or 'oozing', you probably have a weak infill. The lines of the grid, which serve to fill and reinforce, are in this case stringy and not well connected to each other. 

Weak infill can be recognized by the following characteristics:

  • An unstable construction on the inside
  • Weak, stringy print lines, also known as 'stringing' or oozing'

How can you solve or prevent weak infill?

Weak infill can have various causes. That is why we have made an overview with important points for attention and the most common causes and solutions.
  • Choose a strong infill pattern

    No pattern is alike, but there are infill patterns that are naturally stronger than others. We therefore recommend that you always opt for a grid, triangular or solid honeycomb pattern, when a stable structure is essential for your 3D print. Although these patterns take more time, they are extra sturdy. Patterns such as rectilinear and fast honeycomb are ideal for high-speed printing but offer less stability.
  • Reduce the print speed

    In general, the pattern on the inside is printed at a higher speed than the outside lines. When you print at too high a speed, not enough filament is fed through, causing under extrusion. You can easily solve this by reducing the print speed. If you are currently using a print speed of 70 - 80mm/s, for example, halve this speed so that the infill becomes thicker and stronger.
  • Increase the extrusion diameter

    Adjust the settings of your extruder so that the outside of your 3D print is printed with a 0.4mm diameter and the infill with a 0.8mm diameter. In this way, the inside becomes thicker and firmer, while the outside does not lose any of its detail. Keep in mind that this way you also use twice as much filament for the infill.
