3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE
In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.
My 3D print shows unwanted line formation
Are there thick lines sticking out on the side of your 3D print? This should not be the case! Your 3D print is made up of hundreds of different layers of filament, which are stacked so that they eventually form one solid whole. However, sometimes thicker layers are formed that protrude repeatedly and form a kind of pattern. This line formation can have various causes which each have their own solutions.
How can you solve or prevent this line formation?
Line formation on the side of your 3D print can have various causes. That is why we have made an overview with important points for attention and the most common causes and solutions.
Use high-quality filament
This form of line formation is largely caused by poor quality filament. For example, if the diameter of the filament has a deviation of 5% over the entire length, this means that the filament will show a deviation of 0.05mm during printing. It is therefore very important to use consistent and high-quality
3D filament.
Ensure stable extruder temperature
Most 3D printers use a PID controller to regulate the temperature of the extruder. If this PID controller is not adjusted correctly, the temperature can fluctuate over time. Because plastic filament reacts differently to higher and lower temperatures, visible ridges are created in the print that repeat in a fixed pattern. As a rule, the temperature of the extruder should not deviate by more than two degrees. Does the temperature deviate more than two degrees? Then it is wise to recalibrate the PID controller.
Use a flat and firm print bed
If your print bed is not completely flat and moves during printing, this can cause the nozzle to take a different position with each layer. As a result, the thickness can vary per layer and your prints will show unwanted line formation. Therefore, check that all screws and nuts are tight. Do the same with the extruder, the tension of the belts and the adjustment of the print bed.
