3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE
In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.
My 3D print has holes in the connection of the foundation
When your 3D print has different layers, problems can arise with the connection. For example, if you print a 20mm cube on a 40mm cube, holes may appear where the two meet. These holes usually arise in the transition angles where the larger surface transitions to the smaller surface. If the foundation is not strong enough, or does not contain enough plastic, these holes will appear. We discuss the various causes of weak foundations.
The outer wall is not thick enough
If you add more outer outlines to your 3D print, the wall of your print will be thicker and therefore more solid. Since the inside of your 3D print is generally hollow, thickening the outside wall can have a significant effect. The wall thickness is often a multiplication of the size of the nozzle, or print head. For example, if your print head is 0.4mm in size, the wall thickness will generally be 0.8mm - 1.6mm. If holes appear at a wall thickness of 0.8mm, you can increase the number of layers. The correct wall thickness is generally 1.2mm.
The top layer is not solid enough
Another common problem is that the top layer on which the new structure is printed is not strong enough. A top layer that is too thin will not be strong enough to support the rest of your 3D print. You can adjust the thickness of the top layer in your settings. If you used 2 top layers before, increase this to 4 top layers to see if the foundation has become stronger. This way the top and bottom layers of your 3D print can adhere well to each other.
The filling percentage is too low
The last setting you can check is the fill percentage. The top layer is built on the filling percentage. If there is not enough infill to support the top layer, holes will appear. For example, if you previously had the fill percentage set at 20%, increase it to 40% now to see if this improves print quality.
