3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE
In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.
My 3D print shows bubbles and bumps
Does it seem like blobs of filament, also known as 'zits' are ruining the outside of your otherwise perfect print? Then your printer probably suffers from 'blobs and zits'. This phenomenon occurs when the print head changes position and too much filament is extruded at the start or end of a print layer.
How can you prevent and solve 'blobs and zits'?
With almost every print it is possible to define the starting position based on the 3D object. This is marked by a small bump in the shape of a blob. Observe your 3D printer to determine if the blob is forming at the beginning or end of each print layer. Minimise or prevent this 'pimple formation' by making a number of adjustments in your 3D printer software.
No retraction settings
Does it seem like the 'blobs and zits' appear at the beginning of the print layer? Then you can easily solve this problem by adjusting the retraction settings under the heading 'retraction settings' in your slicer software. This setting determines the amount of filament extruded at the start of a new layer. If you have set your extraction distance to 1mm, lower it by entering -0.2mm in the restart settings. The extruder will now only extrude 0.8mm at the start of each print layer to prevent pimple formation.
Adjust the coasting settings
Does it seem like the bumps are at the end of the print layer? Then increase the 'coasting settings'. This setting ensures that the extruder stops just before the end, so that not too much filament is extruded. Increasing the coasting settings by 0.2-0.5mm is usually sufficient.
Avoid unnecessary retractions
Your retraction settings are to prevent oozing or stringing. However, if the nozzle does not have to bridge an open space, oozing will only take place on the inside of the object and will not affect the appearance of the object. Therefore, activate the 'only retract when crossing open spaces' function to avoid retraction while printing the outer layer.
If nothing else helps
If you are unable to avoid the 'blobs and zits', you can also adjust the starting position of each layer, you can select random seam, seam to sharpest corner, these are all listed in your slicer software. When the extruder starts printing at the back of the object, the pimple formation will not (or less) disturb the appearance of the printed 3D object.
