What is PETG filament?

PETG filament is a modified version of PET, the material most people know from the well-known transparent PET bottles, or returnable bottles. PETG combines the advantages of ABS and PLA in one filament: it is both strong and easy to use.

Main properties of PETG filament:

  • Very strong
  • User friendly
  • Light flexible
  • Print temperature: 230-250°C
  • Water repellent
  • Naturally transparent

PETG filament has versatile 3D printing options, you can print objects in any desired shape. At the right temperature, the filament becomes like liquid. This allows you to print with PETG filament just as fast as with PLA filament. In addition, PETG filament is odourless during printing, so you will not be bothered by unpleasant odours. Compared to other filament types, PETG is just as user-friendly to print with as PLA and stronger than ABS.

PETG filament is a suitable material for strong and water-repellent 3D prints. The material PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) is known for the transparent returnable bottles (PET bottles) and is fully recyclable.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of PETG filament?

Advantages PETG filament Disadvantages PETG filament
Does not absorb water Less suitable for bridge structures
Odourless Chance of stringing
Does not break under pressure Prone to wear
Minimal warping Slightly heavier than standard filament (higher density)
Good adhesion to the print bed Print temperature is higher than with PLA
No heated bed required
Recyclable

Tips for printing with PETG filament:

  • PETG is very fluid when it reaches the right printing temperature, allowing high-speed printing.

  • The printing temperature of PETG is between 230°C and 250°C. The higher the temperature, the more shine the object gets.

  • PETG is very suitable for use as a raft. Due to the glossy surface, the part separates easily from the PETG raft.

  • When you turn off the fan while printing the first layers, you decrease the chance of warping (warping of the filament).

  • PETG adheres optimally to a print sticker or 3DLAC.
  • Order a PETG filament sample package to get acquainted with this filament.
