What is a cleaning filament?

The name says it all: you use a cleaning filament to clean your 3D printer. For example, you clean your 3D printer when you change filaments, so that your printer is clean again when you start a new project. Due to the large temperature range of the cleaning filament, it can be used to remove a range of different types of filament.

Main properties of cleaning filament:

  • Keeping your 3D printer clean
  • Removing filament residue
  • Prevents various printing problems
  • Wide temperature range of 150-260°C

All appliances should be cleaned once in a while. 3D printers also get dirty and you have to clean them. The contamination of a 3D printer can lead to a blockage of the nozzle, or mouthpiece. With cleaning filament you can remove the remaining filament residues.

Cleaning filament is a special material for rinsing a 3D printer. It is therefore only suitable for cleaning and not for printing objects. The use of cleaning filament cleans the print head and prevents clogging of the nozzle.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cleaning filament?

Benefits of cleaning filament Disadvantages of cleaning filament
Efficient cleaning Only works for partial blockages
Minimum mechanical stress on printer parts

Tip for printing with cleaning filament:

  • Keep using cleaning filament until the filament coming out of the hot end is clean.
  • Use cleaning filament every time you change filament. Not only can a blockage by filament residues cause problems, but residue from the previous filament colour can also cause irritation. These residues can mix with the new filament colour, creating a mix of colours in your print.

  • If you always use the same type of filament, clean your printer with cleaning filament after 200-400 hours of use.
