How much does it cost to run a 3D printer?

When people think about 3D printing, the costs of running a 3D printer is often a concern. First of all, there’s the printers themselves, in addition to the filament, post processing and electricity costs. However, it’s actually a lot more affordable than you might think and there are ways to lower 3D printing costs. 3D Printer

A significant part of calculating the cost of 3D printing is determining what type of 3D printer you would like to buy. 3D printer prices will vary depending on what type of printer it is. The two main types of 3D printers are FDM printers (which tend to be more widely used) or SLA printers (which print using resin).

How much does a 3D printer cost?

FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) printers are generally more affordable than SLA printers. These printers are more suited to beginners and are a more affordable way to start 3D printing. Prices for FDM printers range from under £200 for a desktop printer to a few thousand pounds for industrial models.
Stereolithography (SLA) printers tend to be more expensive as an initial outlay. Also, the costs of the resin are generally higher when compared to FDM filament costs. SLA printer prices range from under £200 – £3000.
There are many additional costs associated with using an SLA printer, too. These include equipment solvents to wash away any excess resin, protective gloves, ventilators and masks.

Electricity Costs

Once you’ve determined which 3D printer you will be using, another price consideration will be the associated electricity costs.

How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

The majority of 3D printers use approximately 50 watts per hour, which can be considered to be energy efficient.
Some printers that require the heated bed to warm up in a short amount of time, need 120 volt power to do so, and can consume up to 600 watts per hour during this time. Whilst this is a higher amount than the majority of 3D printers, they won’t consistently use that much power. That amount should reduce to 50 - 80 watts per hour once it’s heated up.
When using an FDM printer, the x, y and z-axis motors and the control computer all need power. DLP resin printers need power for the z-axis motor, the control computer and the UV light source (none of which will use many watts of power). Prices are approximate and will vary depending on many different factors but on average a standard 3D filament printer will cost under 5p per hour to run.

Filament

Another price consideration is the filament that the 3D printer will use. 3D printing material costs will vary depending on what it is that you’re printing, as well as the type of filament that your printer accepts.

How often the 3D printing filament will need to be replaced will depend on how often you’ll be printing and the size of the prints. For people who are wanting to 3D print regularly, it would be better to bulk buy filament. That way you will get better value for money and a lower average 3D print price.

PLA and ABS filaments are the most common type of filament for FDM printers and prices can range from around £15 - £40 per 1kg. Using these prices, a 100g print will cost approximately £1.50 - £4 per print. SLA resin costs are more expensive however, and prices can range from around £20 for 0.5kg - £130 per 1kg of resin.
