3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE

In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.

What is the influence of the layer height in 3D printing?

The layer height is simply the height of the layer of filament that your 3D printer squeezes out. You can adjust the layer height using a slicer program. The correct layer height is not only important for the print speed, but also for the smoothness and resolution of the 3D print. A thinner layer height often results in a smoother surface and tighter details. However, the disadvantage of this is that this is accompanied by a longer printing time.

With a thicker layer height, your 3D printer will get noticeable ridges from the different layers. If you want a smooth surface, you will have to finish your 3D print to remove the layering effect.

How do I remove the layering effect on my 3D print?

Does your 3D print have a ribbed surface and do you want to make it smooth? There are several post-processing items available to help with this. By using these tools you will save a lot of time.

Sanding allows you to smooth out the ridges, bumps and other imperfections of your 3D print. This is especially suitable for processing large surfaces. You can sand your 3D print with sandpaper, but it is also possible to bead blast your object. With both methods, you ensure that the layering effect of your 3D print disappears.

Some filaments dissolve when using certain substances. For example, ABS filament dissolves in acetone and HIPS filament in limonene. By finishing your print with these materials, you create a smooth and glossy finish. Be careful with this so you don't damage your print if you use it too much.

What is under-extrusion?

Under-extrusion can be recognised by the lack of layers, layers that are not printed properly or do not connect properly. This can be due to several reasons, see this under-extrusion page in our 3D Help Center for more information and ways to fix this issue.
